Want to help people affected by hurricane Katrina?
News agencies are reporting that as many as a million people on
the Gulf Coast have been displaced by hurricane Katrina. Shelters have
an immediate need for food, clothing and bedding for their residents.
If you have the ability to donate items, click here for a list of places you
can send items. If you would prefer to donate money, that will be
equally appreciated! We should also keep in mind that local
agencies are going to need help. As their parent agencies divert resources
to the hurricane victims, they won't have anything left for local people. So
if you would prefer to donate locally, please do so. Everything
counts. Here is a list of places you can donate money:
-
American
Red Cross
-
Networkforgood
(includes places you can donate that will help pets)
-
NOVA
(National Organization for Victim Assistance). They will be providing
long-term assistance on many levels.

The
Salvation Army is asking for monetary donations both on line, by
mail and in person at Wal-marts and Sams club. A $100 donation
will feed a family of four for two days, provide two cases of drinking
water and one household clean-up kit.
Dear quilting friends, You may have heard that there is no longer a need
for quilts or donations for relief efforts in the southern states so
terribly affected by the recent hurricanes, but our National Network
Volunteers for ABC Quilts have been overwhelmed by requests for hundreds
more quilts. South West Louisiana in particular is in great need as United
Way Agencies look for supplies, including quilts, to help settle returning
families. We ask you to consider making quilts, from baby to twin bed-size.
When you have finished, please call or e-mail our office to see where to
send the quilts. We are going to keep close track of the needs in Louisiana
and Texas, and have you send them directly there at first. When they have
enough, we are going to begin stock-piling quilts in our National Office to
have on the ready.

Sacred Heart School in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, is enrolling students
who have been displaced by Katrina. Before the storm, the school enrolled
450 students. Thirty-six displaced students have enrolled so far, and an
additional 20 or 30 are expected. Sacred Heart's open-arms policy is putting
severe strains on resources, and the school is appealing for help. The
school needs additional funds to: * provide lunches to the new students *
provide textbooks * provide school supplies * hire additional
teachers. In addition, the school is seeking funds to provide
humanitarian relief to the displaced families. Most of the families were
able to evacuate with only the clothes they were wearing. Many have
homeowner's insurance or renter's insurance, but those payments have not yet
kicked in. The families have immediate needs including: * deposits for
housing and utilities * groceries * personal care products * clothing *
medications. If you are interested in helping, or if you are able to
adopt a child or family, please call Althea Scarborough, secretary at Sacred
Heart School, at 601-408-8126.

Thanks to Katrina and Rita, in a matter of weeks the number of homeless
children in this country has more than quadrupled. The shelters of
Louisiana - and the now the entire US - are overflowing with displaced
persons. Some are living temporarily with friends and families, but their
lives have been completely destroyed and too soon they must make their own
ways - in new places. Your talents are greatly needed here and everywhere
there are evacuees from these disasters.
QUILTERS FOR KATRINA began in New Iberia, Louisiana two days after
Katrina destroyed New Orleans. Many of our local quilters were displaced by
Rita when she took down what was left of the Louisiana coast. In
consideration of these overturned lives, I am asking QUILTERS everywhere to
pledge TWO QUILTS. One large and one small to victims of these
disasters.
Rapid Tags, a New Jersey label manufacturer, donated 5000 labels reading:
“Quilters for Katrina - 2005 - May God Be With You.” I am asking for
5,000 quilts from quilters across the nation. Please pledge your support.
Please call or e-mail me: Julia P. Fleming 404 Caroline St. New
Iberia, LA 70560 337-560-5187 juliaflem@cox.net

Blankets for the Gulf.
My goal is to collect 5,000 hand-made blankets by December 1st and then I
will be delivering them to hurricane victims during the holidays. You can
read more about this project on my website. I started this project
last month and so far it has spread by word-of-mouth and is really gaining
momentum - I'm very excited about the results so far! A Girl Scout troop
from Minnesota is sending me 100 blankets this week and I've been hearing
similar good news from folks all over the country. But I think the key to
meeting the goal of 5,000 is to continue to spread the word. Thank you
very much, Heather Foeh
